That largely depends on how agressive you are in demanding one. Left to the IRS to process at its pace, it can take a few months. I was in the process of selling my home and needed the lien release to close. I paid off the lien in person, in cash, at the IRS office and demanded a lien release, notarized for filing, within 24 hours or I would sue them for slander of title. I got my release from a very unhappy IRS clerk.
